    May 22, 2012 | 0 comments
A wide variety of products and solutions are available to help facilities managers better control energy and water use, manage costs, and save time. Some of these products are rising above the rest when it comes to improving building performance; as a result, they’re receiving national attention from commercial building magazines. Check out just a few of these products that are improving energy efficiency, and find out why they’re being recognized.

  2. The Hidden Benefits of Securing Your Building

    March 13, 2012 | 1 comment

Security solutions provide peace of mind for facilities managers everywhere. But some components of a commercial building’s security program can also boost a facilities manager’s bottom line by providing benefits that go beyond providing a safer environment. (more…)

  3. The Lowdown on LEED 2012

    March 8, 2012 | 0 comments

With the changes LEED 2012 brings to the table for its projected November launch, the rating system wants to show how certified buildings actually save energy and water.

Much has changed in the industry since LEED was first created in 2000. Some professionals now believe that points can be achieved too easily (and aren’t always representative of actual performance). For example, by installing a bike rack, a building with inefficient lighting and an outdated boiler can still earn points. And a lack of post-LEED-certification reporting requirements means there aren’t penalties for neglecting to use newly installed systems to achieve efficiency. (more…)

  4. The Future of Energy Efficiency: Net Zero Energy Buildings

    February 21, 2012 | 1 comment

Increasing energy efficiency is a goal for almost every building owner and facility manager. But what if a building could actually become completely energy self-sufficient? That’s the idea behind Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs). (more…)

  5. Creative Financing Options for Energy Efficiency Retrofits

    January 31, 2012 | 1 comment

Potential capital investment costs can quickly put energy efficient retrofit projects on the backburner for many commercial building owners. Yet, once energy efficient equipment and practices are put in place, potential energy savings – from 10 to 50 percent according to Pike Research – can often quickly recoup those investments. As energy prices continue to rise, now is the time to bring energy efficiency back to the forefront with some creative financial planning options aimed at helping building owners realize sustainability goals for their properties. (more…)

  6. Freeze Heating Costs This Winter

    September 27, 2011 | 0 comments

Winter poses many challenges for commercial buildings. Freezing and thawing cycles, temperature variations, deicing chemicals, and snow loads can cause extensive damage to the building infrastructure that allows not only heat to escape, but cold air to infiltrate access points– resulting in a loss of heat and energy efficiency. Inspecting and winterizing the building now before winter sets in by making any needed repairs (such as roof leaks, masonry cracks or drafty windows), can often mean significant savings on heating expenses. Early autumn is also a great time to consider and implement proactive measures to help prevent heat loss, increase energy efficiency, and freeze heating costs. (more…)

When it comes to year-round temperature control, the first concern that comes to mind for property owners is budget. Making the final buying decision on products, such as commercial window film, that impact temperature control can be difficult. However, with the introduction of low-emissivity (low e) window film, the decision should be more clear-cut, as low e films help provide energy savings in both warm and cold weather months.
