  1. Improve HVAC Energy Efficiency Year-Round

    December 16, 2014 | 4 comments

HVAC systems are used continuously in commercial buildings. In fact, HVAC systems account for roughly 41% of total commercial building electrical usage – almost double that of any other building system – according to Alliant Energy. (Air conditioning alone represents 45% of the total peak energy use.) This obviously increases monthly utility bills, but also presents a big opportunity for regular energy savings. (more…)

  2. First Building Achieves WELL Platinum Certification

    December 9, 2014 | 2 comments

The first building to achieve the WELL Platinum Pilot Certification from the International WELL Building Institute has been identified: the Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh.

This facility was also the first to meet the International Living Future Institute’s Living Building Challenge, achieving Net Zero Energy Certification. (Not to mention its LEED Platinum and Four-Stars Sustainable Sites Initiative certification.)

How did they do it? The Center for Sustainable Landscapes focused on an integrated design process that involved evaluation of end-users’ needs, along with charrettes between the project team and staff throughout the process. (more…)

    December 2, 2014 | 9 comments

Understanding how high-performance window film works and what it can offer to commercial buildings is the first step in deciding whether it will be an effective energy-efficiency option for your organization. But even after you learn about window film’s benefits, it can still be challenging to know what type will address your building’s unique requirements. (more…)

  4. Window Film Improves Energy Efficiency in All-Glass Buildings

    July 15, 2014 | 0 comments

All-glass buildings and façades can be seen in skylines across almost every major U.S. city. They offer tenants and occupants breathtaking views, and provide a connection with nature that may help improve productivity and satisfaction.

The popularity of all-glass buildings is partially due to the fact that most tenants and occupants enjoy windows with a visual connection to outdoor scenery. Another reason for their prevalence? Many building owners indicate that, the bigger the windows, the easier it is to rent or sell building space.

But when it comes to paying the utility bills, glass buildings may not make as much financial sense as other types of buildings. (more…)

  5. The Impacts of Weather on Energy Efficiency

    June 3, 2014 | 0 comments

The issues of climate change and global warming as they relate to energy efficiency have long been topics of debate. But according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s U.S. Energy Sector Vulnerabilities to Climate Change and Extreme Weather report, changes in weather and climate are already impacting the energy sector across the country. This interactive map, put together by the U.S. Department of Energy, shows the affects of increasing temperatures, decreasing water availability, and increasing intensity and frequency of storms and flooding in the last decade.

  6. Comparing Window Film and Window Shades

    May 20, 2014 | 5 comments

Sunlight can be extremely valuable for improving health and productivity. But if the sun’s UV rays are not controlled, they can cause damage to skin, floors and furniture, artwork, wallcoverings, and display merchandise.

Window film is a viable option for controlling UV rays, but it certainly isn’t the only option. How does window film stack up when compared to the most obvious sun-blocking alternative: window shades and blinds? (more…)

The sun offers many benefits, such as increased productivity and reduced reliance on electric lighting; but the sun’s UV rays can also damage skin and building assets if they’re not controlled.

UV rays can penetrate windows in commercial buildings, homes and automobiles, which exposes occupants to radiation. This exposure is cumulative, so the total damage an occupant receives is directly related to how often they’re exposed to UV rays.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, UV radiation wavelengths are classified as (more…)

  10. Replacement Windows: Best Choice for Historic Homes?

    February 26, 2013 | 7 comments

Historic homes were often constructed with energy savings and sustainability in mind, using thick walls, light-reflecting finishes, operable shutters, and awnings/porches that provide shade.

As they age, older homes can be made more energy efficient – and replacing outdated components isn’t always (more…)
