Window Film Offers Benefits Beyond Energy Savings

October 21, 2014 | 5 comments

Energy savings is often front-and-center in conversations about commercial window film. As an effective way to control solar heat gain and reduce monthly energy bills, low-e window film can help commercial building owners and managers save money and improve thermal comfort. But window film can also address several other issues within a commercial facility.

Expand Security
Window film can help improve safety of glass panels when they’re broken. Security window film – or window film with safety features – can provide a barrier that holds glass in place upon impact. Instead of sending shards of glass into the air, security window film helps keep glass in place to protect tenants and occupants inside a building when glass is broken. Window film can also improve safety by making doorways more obvious in all-glass storefronts, which may help reduce the likelihood of visitors walking into glass walls or doors.

Enhance Décor & Wayfinding
Whether you’re talking about restaurants, hotels, or office space, window film can be used on both the interior and exterior of your facility to uniquely brand a department (or an entire organization) or aid visitors with wayfinding.

Custom window film artwork can easily be removed or changed, and can be placed on almost any surface: glass, metal, painted, or other flat/cylindrical surfaces. You also get to control size, color, texture, and pattern in any combination. The look of etched glass can even be achieved through frosted films (at a fraction of the cost).

Establish Privacy
Window film can help provide appropriate levels of privacy for staff-only areas, conceal messy or cluttered areas, and offer employees visual separation from one another. From evenly diffusing daylight to completely blocking it, decorative window film can control as much of a view as required – without blocking daylight (unless you want it to).

Improve Insect Control
Insects have a tendency to flock near sun-exposed areas of a space. During daylight hours, fewer gnats and flies may congregate around glass treated with window film thanks to its ability to control solar heat gain and UV rays, which is especially helpful in restaurants, storefronts, offices, and hotels. In the evening hours, window film can help reduce the amount of light being emitted from your building through exterior glass. When heat and glow from interior lights is reduced, bugs may be less likely to move toward the windows (they’ll be darker and cooler than they were previously).

Have you used window film to solve problems beyond energy use reduction? How has window film benefitted your commercial building?

Thanks for sharing these benefits of window films for home owners. I had no idea that window film could actually help protect residents who have had their window shattered. Plus, if the window also establish some privacy and prevent people from looking into your home, then that can also reduce the chances of theft. In fact, hearing all this makes me want to go and get some window film for all of my first floor windows.

I also didn’t know about the protection aspect, Dolores! It would be great to have such a strong protection for your windows. I also really love what the article said about bug control. I never would’ve guessed that their dimming of the sun would result in less pests. When the film reduces energy costs, strengthens your windows, and protects you from pests, it really seems like it would be a good asset to any home.
