To meet sustainability goals and move toward net zero energy buildings, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) implemented its Green Proving Ground program in 2012 to test new green building technology during its pre- or early-commercial stage.
Because working with unproven commercial products can be risky for commercial building owners and managers, the Green Proving Ground program tests new technologies first in its own U.S. GSA buildings to help commercial facilities professionals gauge which new solutions might work well in their own buildings. Earlier this year, the ENERGY STAR National Building Competition – Battle of the Buildings – encouraged teams from more than 3,000 commercial buildings across all 50 states to compete for the greatest increase in energy efficiency.
All in all, National Building Competition participants saved more than $20 million in utility bills by reducing total energy usage by more than 900 million kBtus. Nearly 50 buildings demonstrated energy-use reductions of 20% or greater in one year. Here are a few of their success stories … (more…)
